VPN is one of the hardest affiliate niches to rank in. The money keywords are owned by Future plc, Ziff Davis and a handful of specialist review sites with hundreds of hands-on tests behind them, and Google's reviews system was written with exactly this kind of content in mind. It is still possible to build a VPN site that earns from search — but only by choosing keywords the big publishers neglect, structuring the site so authority flows to the money pages, and producing review pages that demonstrate real testing. This guide covers each step.
The keyword map: where the traffic is and where you can win
VPN search demand splits into clusters with very different competition. The table groups them with typical difficulty bands and the page type that ranks.
| Cluster | Example queries | Difficulty | Page type that ranks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head terms | “best vpn”, “vpn”, “free vpn” | Very high (KD 80+) | Big-publisher roundups; not a target for a new site |
| Brand reviews | “nordvpn review”, “surfshark review” | High | Long hands-on review with test data |
| Brand comparisons | “nordvpn vs surfshark”, “proton vpn vs mullvad” | Medium | Head-to-head page with a verdict |
| Best-for lists | “best vpn for torrenting”, “best vpn for firestick” | Medium–high | Ranked list with criteria and table |
| Geo pages | “best vpn for Turkey”, “vpn for China” | Medium, varies by country | Country page with legal context and tested providers |
| Unblocking guides | “watch BBC iPlayer abroad”, “unblock Crunchyroll in India” | Low–medium | Step-by-step guide with a short provider list |
| Problem/how-to | “vpn slow on wifi”, “set up vpn on router” | Low | Troubleshooting article |
| Deals | “nordvpn coupon”, “vpn black friday” | Medium, seasonal | Brand deal page, updated per sale |
| Affiliate-program queries | “nordvpn affiliate program”, “best vpn affiliate programs” | Very low (KD 2–5 in Ahrefs) | Program review — the pages this site is built on |
| Reseller and white label | “vpn reseller”, “white label vpn” | Low (KD 9–21) | Explainer plus provider list |
A new site should start at the bottom of this table and work upwards. Affiliate-program, reseller, unblocking and problem clusters have low difficulty and steady demand; they build the topical authority that eventually lets best-for and comparison pages rank. Chasing “best vpn” first is how most VPN sites fail.
Site architecture: hub and spoke
Google rewards sites whose structure makes topical coverage obvious. For a VPN affiliate site that means a small number of hubs, each with spokes that link up and across.
| Hub | URL pattern | Spokes |
|---|---|---|
| Provider reviews | /reviews/nordvpn/ | Brand review, brand deal page, brand comparisons |
| Best-for lists | /best/vpn-for-streaming/ | Per-service unblocking guides |
| Countries | /vpn-for/turkey/ | Legal status, tested providers, local streaming |
| Guides | /guides/ | Setup, troubleshooting, explainers |
| Affiliate programs (this site) | /programs/nordvpn/ | Program review, commission guide, news |
Three rules keep the structure working. Every spoke links to its hub and to at least two sibling spokes with descriptive anchors. Every hub links to all its spokes from the body, not only from navigation. And the money pages — reviews and best-for lists — sit no more than two clicks from the homepage.
Keep URLs short and stable. Do not put the year in the slug; put it in the title tag and update it. Do not create a new URL for each year's Black Friday page; update the same one.
What a VPN review page needs to rank
Google's reviews system evaluates whether review content shows first-hand experience and is written for the reader rather than for the affiliate link. In the VPN niche the test is strict because the top-ranking competitors run speed tests on dozens of servers and publish the numbers. A review page that can compete has:
- Evidence of use. Original screenshots of the apps, speed-test results with the date and the server, which streaming services worked on which server, DNS and WebRTC leak-test results.
- Quantitative data. Download speed before and after connecting, latency, number of servers and countries, simultaneous connections, price per month on each plan length.
- Comparison with alternatives. How the provider compares with two or three competitors on the same tests, and who it is not right for.
- A verdict with reasons. Who should buy, who should not, and what the best plan is.
- Pros and cons that are specific. “Fast” is a tell; “averaged 92% of base speed on UK servers over ten tests” is evidence.
- A visible update date and a changelog of what was re-tested.
Pages built from the provider's marketing copy — the feature list, the server count, the “military-grade encryption” line — do not rank and are the content Google's system was designed to filter.
E-E-A-T: authors, methodology, disclosure
Every review needs a named author with a bio that explains why they are qualified to test VPNs, and a second person credited for fact-checking the figures. A testing-methodology page describing how speeds are measured, which services are checked and how often content is re-tested is linked from every review. The affiliate disclosure is on the page, not only in the footer, and the ranking criteria are published so that readers can see commission did not decide the order.
These signals matter more in VPN than in most niches because the category overlaps with security advice. Treat the site like a consumer-protection publication and the rest of SEO becomes easier.
On-page SEO for VPN pages
Title and heading patterns
| Page | Title pattern | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Review | [Brand] Review 2026: Speed Tests, Streaming, Price | Lead with the brand; year updated in place |
| Comparison | [Brand A] vs [Brand B]: Which VPN Is Better in 2026? | Lead with the competitor if its brand search is larger |
| Best-for | Best VPN for [Use Case] in 2026 (Tested) | “Tested” earns the click against untested lists |
| Program | [Brand] Affiliate Program: Commission, Cookie and Payouts | Include the three words publishers search for |
| Deal | [Brand] Coupon & Black Friday Deal: [X]% Off | Update the percentage, keep the URL |
Structured data
Use Review or Product with AggregateRating only where there is a real rating produced by your methodology. Use FAQPage on pages with a genuine FAQ block, BreadcrumbList everywhere, Article with author and dateModified on guides and news, and ItemList on ranked lists. Do not mark up affiliate CTAs as products you sell.
Affiliate links
Add rel="sponsored" (or rel="nofollow sponsored") to every affiliate link. Redirect-based link cloaking through your own domain is fine as long as the redirect URL is disallowed in robots.txt and the links still carry the attribute. Keep affiliate links out of the first paragraph of informational content; on review pages put the first one after the verdict, where it converts best.
Internal linking
Link from every informational guide to the review or best-for page it supports, with an anchor that names the page's topic. Link from every review to the comparisons it appears in. Audit quarterly for orphan pages — a page with no internal links cannot rank.
Technical SEO for a VPN site
Most VPN affiliate sites are content sites with no reason to be slow. Static generation or aggressive caching, images compressed and sized, no third-party scripts that are not earning their place. Core Web Vitals are a tiebreaker, and in a niche where competitors are heavy publisher sites a lean page is an advantage.
If you publish for more than one country in the same language — a UK and a US edition — use hreflang between them and keep the content genuinely different: prices in local currency, local streaming services, local legal context. Duplicated content across country folders is one of the fastest ways to lose rankings in this niche.
Keep a clean index: noindex tag pages, paginated archives and thin deal pages outside sale periods. Submit an XML sitemap and monitor crawl stats in Search Console for pages that stop being fetched.
Link building that works in the VPN niche
Links decide rankings for every commercial VPN query. Methods that have worked for sites in this category, in order of effort:
- Original research. A speed benchmark across providers, a survey on VPN use in one country, a dataset of streaming blocks. Journalists in the tech press cite these, and the VPN providers themselves share them.
- Country and legal explainers. Pages on the legal status of VPNs in restrictive countries attract links from travel, expat and education sites that would never link to a review.
- Expert commentary. Responding to journalist requests on privacy and security topics with a named expert earns links from publications the paid-link market cannot reach.
- Provider relationships. Affiliate managers at NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton can arrange inclusion in partner pages, co-marketing and quotes. Ask.
- Resource and tool pages. A good leak-test or speed-test tool gets linked from forums and support threads organically.
Avoid private blog networks and bulk guest posts on general tech sites. The niche is watched closely, the money keywords are audited by competitors, and the sites that lost rankings in recent updates were overwhelmingly the ones built on paid links.
Measuring what matters
Search Console tells you impressions and clicks per page. Your affiliate dashboards, tagged with SubIDs per page, tell you sales per page. Join the two in a spreadsheet and sort by revenue per thousand visits. The pages at the top are the ones to update first, link to most and expand into siblings. The pages at the bottom with high impressions and no revenue are usually informational content that needs a clearer path to a money page, not more words.
Frequently asked questions
Is the VPN niche too competitive for a new affiliate site?
For head terms like “best vpn”, yes. For affiliate-program queries, reseller queries, unblocking guides, country pages and long-tail comparisons, no — those clusters have difficulty scores in the single digits to low twenties and are where new sites should start.
How many VPN reviews does a site need before it ranks for best-for lists?
There is no fixed number, but a best-for list needs to link to reviews of the providers it ranks. In practice sites start ranking for mid-competition lists once they have tested and reviewed around eight to ten providers and built the comparison pages between them.
Should affiliate links on a VPN site be nofollow?
They should carry rel="sponsored"; adding nofollow as well is harmless and common. Google treats both as hints that the link is paid. Links without either attribute on a site that earns commissions are a risk to the site, not to the merchant.
Does Google penalise VPN affiliate sites?
Not for being affiliate sites. It demotes thin review content that shows no first-hand experience and sites whose links were bought at scale. VPN sites with real testing data, named authors and a clear methodology have held rankings through the reviews-system updates.
How often should VPN review pages be updated?
Re-test streaming access and speeds at least quarterly, and immediately when a provider changes pricing, apps or ownership. Update the visible date and note what changed; a review dated two years ago loses the click to one dated last month even if the content is better.
Can I use the provider's own screenshots and server counts?
Server counts and plan prices, yes, with the date. Screenshots, no — use your own. Reviews that reuse the provider's media are the clearest signal to Google's reviews system that no testing happened.
